Russian Train Couplers CA-3 & SA-3 of Railway Coupler for freight wagon
The CA-3 Automatic Coupler (also designated SA-3, from Russian Советская автосцепка, 3-й вариант – Soviet Automatic Coupler, 3rd Variant) is the standard automatic coupler for railway rolling stock across Russia and the former Soviet Union states. Developed in 1932 and finalized in 1935, this Willison-type coupler remains the backbone of freight and passenger rail operations on 1520mm (1524mm) gauge networks.
The CA-3 features a non-rigid automatic coupling design with three operational states: free state, coupling interlock (locked) state, and uncoupling state. The coupler head consists of the coupler body, lock, lock pawl, lock stop, lock lift, lock lift shaft, and associated hardware. When two couplers in free state come into contact, they automatically engage. The coupler also features a unique ‘push’ position that facilitates shunting operations. Visual monitoring of the coupling mechanism is possible without personnel entering between cars.
Key design features include:
-
Tight-lock coupling with only 10mm free clearance between coupled profiles, reducing longitudinal train impacts and improving dynamic performance
-
High structural strength with main components manufactured from TB/T2942-E grade steel
-
Superior traction performance capable of towing over 8,000 tons under severe weather conditions
-
Enhanced impact resistance with higher allowable impact speed
-
Automatic re-coupling capability after unintended uncoupling without separating cars
The CA-3 coupler is governed by a comprehensive suite of GOST and interstate standards, including GOST 32885-2014 (design and dimensions), GOST 21447-75 (coupling contour and dimensions), GOST 3475-2000 (setting dimensions for 1520mm gauge), and GOST 977-88 (material specifications). Technical manufacturing standards include GOST 22703-91 and STO RZHD 1.05.003-2006.
The CA-3 remains actively deployed across Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Finland, Iraq, Turkey, Sweden, Norway, Australia, and Slovakia.
