What is a lightweight resilient wheel and why do metro wheels fail from noise and vibration?

A lightweight resilient wheel (also known as rubber-sprung wheel) is a composite wheel construction where a viscoelastic rubber layer is inserted between the steel tyre and the wheel centre. Its job: isolate wheel-rail noise and vibration at the source—the wheel-rail contact. When conventional solid steel wheels are used in metro service, you get excessive curve squeal (up to 30 dB higher), rolling noise, track vibration, increased wheel/rail wear, and passenger complaints.
