AAR Standard C10 Coupler Knuckle Pins

The Coupler Pin C10 (also known as the Knuckle Pivot Pin) is a high-strength, heat-treated alloy steel component that serves as the primary axis for the coupler knuckle. Designed to meet the stringent requirements of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), the C10 pin must withstand immense shear forces during traction while ensuring the smooth opening and closing of the knuckle.


1. Material & Metallurgical Excellence

To prevent "break-in-two" accidents, our C10 pins are manufactured using advanced metallurgical standards:

  • High-Tensile Alloy Steel: Forged from premium alloy steel compliant with AAR M-118 specifications.

  • Induction Hardening: The pins undergo precision induction hardening and tempering to achieve a superior balance of surface hardness and core toughness.

  • Surface Hardness: Typically maintained between 32-38 HRC (or according to specific AAR Grade requirements) to provide maximum wear resistance against constant friction.

Our C10 pins are engineered for universal fitment across standard AAR coupler systems:

  • Standard Dimensions: 1-5/8" diameter (approx. 41.28 mm), precision-ground to ensure a smooth fit within the coupler head and knuckle pin holes.

  • System Compatibility: Fully compatible with Type E (E60, SBE60) and Type F (F70, SF70) couplers, as well as various rotary coupler designs.

  • Securing Mechanism: Each pin features a precision-drilled hole at the base for heavy-duty cotter pins, ensuring the pivot pin remains securely seated under vibration.

  • Inspection Intervals: Knuckle pins should be inspected during every major car overhaul for signs of bending, excessive wear, or cracking.

  • Wear Limits: Pins showing a diameter reduction of more than 1.5mm (1/16") due to wear should be replaced to prevent excessive slack in the coupling system.

  • Lubrication: While C10 pins are designed for heavy-duty use, applying a thin layer of railroad-approved dry lubricant during installation can further reduce friction-induced wear.
