1. General Description

The Railway Transmission System Bogie Gearbox (Heavy-Duty Series) is a rugged, field-proven drivetrain component developed for the most demanding freight and heavy-haul rail operations. Engineered for continuous service under extreme torque loads and adverse environmental conditions, this gearbox delivers exceptional reliability, low lifecycle costs, and ease of maintainability.

The Railway Transmission System Bogie Gearbox is a precision-engineered drive solution purpose-built for heavy-duty railway rolling stock. As the core component of the bogie drivetrain, this gearbox system efficiently transfers traction motor torque to the wheelsets, delivering dependable and robust power transmission for locomotives operating under 30-ton axle load conditions and high-capacity freight rail applications.

Designed with a split housing configuration, the gearbox consists of upper and lower casings joined by precision dowel pins and high-strength bolts, facilitating straightforward installation, inspection, and maintenance—critical factors for minimizing fleet downtime.


2. Structural Design & Engineering Features

Housing Construction

  • Material: High-grade nodular cast iron (QT500-7) with minimum tensile strength of 500 MPa and yield strength of 320 MPa

  • Design Philosophy: Thin-wall casting with principal wall thickness of 12–16 mm, achieving an optimal balance between structural rigidity and weight reduction

  • Envelope Dimensions: Optimized for installation within 1100 mm × 900 mm × 400 mm bogie mounting envelopes

Gear Transmission System

  • Gear Type: Helical cylindrical gears, selected for superior load distribution, reduced noise emissions, and enhanced ride comfort compared to straight-cut alternatives

  • Gear Ratio: Customizable within the range of i = 5.5 to 6.5 to suit diverse traction requirements

  • Gear Materials: Case-carburized alloy steel conforming to EN 10084 standards, with surface hardening to ensure:

    • Contact fatigue safety factor (SH) > 1.2

Bearing Arrangement

  • Output Side: Twin tapered roller bearings mounted in a back-to-back configuration around the axle shaft, providing superior load equalization and increased support rigidity

  • Input Side: Cylindrical roller bearing combined with a four-point angular contact ball bearing, effectively managing both radial loads and axial thrust forces

  • Service Life: Rated bearing life exceeds 20,000 operational hours under full rated load conditions


3. Lubrication & Sealing System

  • Lubrication Mode: Dual-mode system—splash lubrication at low speeds, transitioning to forced pressure lubrication at medium to high speeds, with an integrated gear pump delivering up to 1.85 L/min at 1.2 bar

  • Lubricant: High-chemical-stability synthetic oil (e.g., Modlugar SHC 220), formulated to maintain viscosity and film strength under elevated temperatures and high tooth-flank pressures

  • Sealing Solution: Non-contact labyrinth seals on both input and output shafts, supplemented by outer felt rings for dust exclusion—effectively preventing oil leakage while blocking external contaminants from entering the gearbox cavity
