Our AAR Standard SE69CE Type EF Double Shelf Freight Wagon Coupler is a premium railway coupling component engineered to meet the stringent requirements of the Association of American Railroads. The SE69CE is an E/F Type coupler featuring both top and bottom shelves, designed for the most demanding freight service applications including hazardous material transportation .

E/F Type Design Heritage

The Type EF coupler was developed by combining the proven head geometry of the Type E coupler with the advanced shank and tail design of the Type F coupler . This hybrid design provides the lateral oscillating capability required for smooth curve negotiation on longer freight wagons, while maintaining compatibility with existing Type E coupler contours . The SE69CE represents a current service variant within the EF coupler family .

Double Shelf Safety System

The prefix "SE" in the model designation indicates double shelf configuration with both top and bottom shelves projecting from the coupler head front face . This safety feature serves a critical purpose:

The shelves prevent vertical coupler disengagement during train derailment, significantly reducing the risk of car climbing and minimizing the potential for tank car shell puncture . The bottom shelf supports a mating coupler in the event of pull-out from the car sill, keeping it from falling to the roadbed . The top shelf acts as a hood that prevents a derailed car's coupler from riding up and penetrating the head of an adjacent tank car .

Safety Mandate for Hazardous Materials

The double shelf coupler design was developed in response to safety concerns for tank car service in the 1970s. Following AAR mandates, all hazardous material tank cars in interchange service have been required to be equipped with couplers featuring top and bottom shelves since 1995 . Our SE69CE coupler is manufactured from AAR M-201 Grade E steel, an alloy steel casting with heat treatment including quenching and tempering . Grade E steel provides high strength structure with reliable safety performance and excellent interchangeability . The material offers:

• Elongation: 14% minimum

• Impact energy: 27 J minimum

• Hardness range: 241-311 HBW

Design Features

1. Double Shelf Safety System
