Our AAR E60DE Type E Freight Wagon Coupler with Bottom Shelf is a precision engineered coupling component manufactured in compliance with Association of American Railroads standards for freight wagon applications. The E60DE represents the standard Type E coupler configuration with a bottom shelf feature that provides enhanced vertical retention and safety during train operations .

Type E Coupler Heritage

The Type E coupler was designated as the standard freight car coupler in 1932 and remains the most widely used coupler design across North American railway networks . While standard Type E couplers do not interlock in the vertical direction, the introduction of shelf couplers addressed the need for enhanced vertical retention during derailment scenarios . Our E60DE incorporates this crucial bottom shelf safety feature.

Bottom Shelf Anti-Climbing Safety Feature

The bottom shelf provides mechanical interlocking capability that prevents vertical coupler disengagement during train derailment, significantly reducing the risk of train jackknifing or car puncturing . All new and rebuilt cars must be equipped with couplers having a bottom shelf as a minimum requirement, as the shelf serves to support a mating coupler suffering a pull-out from the car sill, keeping it from falling to the roadbed and presenting a derailment hazard .

The bottom shelf design features a lower abutment surface that serves as a safety feature designed to hold the mating coupler in the event the mating coupler fails. During normal usage, this lower abutment surface will not normally come in contact with the mating coupler, but merely serves as a safety feature to prevent accidents and possible derailments .

AAR Standard Compliance

Our E60DE coupler meets AAR S-102 specifications for Type E Standard and Alternate Standard couplers . The coupler contour complies with AAR S-106 specification with the No. 10-A contour at coupler mating lines, ensuring full interchangeability with existing Type E couplers in service .

Grade E Steel Construction

The coupler body, knuckle, and lock are manufactured from AAR M-201 Grade E steel, an alloy steel casting with heat treatment including quenching and tempering . The letter "E" is cast on the product body to indicate the material grade. Grade E+ material is also available for applications requiring maximum tensile strength .
